Policies Towards other Religions
- Major Religion was shamanism
- Shamanism is a religion in which the people accept that various nature spirits exist and effect the world they live in
- Their holy figure is known as a shaman and they would perform rituals to help the well being of the tribe and individuals
- Shaman were very powerful and highly respected and sometimes even more than the leader of their tribe
- Shaman were also used to contact spirits and also tell prophecies
- This was their religion because they used the idea of their being multiple gods and them having individual duties to help explain the world around them
Policies Towards other Religions
- They were highly tolerant of other religions
- Genghis Khan ensured there was religious freedom
- He also ensured there was no taxation on those of a different religion
- The Mongols built places of worship for people with different religions
- They allowed religious freedom because they had the people they conquered work for them
- Being religiously tolerant would prevent revolt
- If they let the people practice their religion, it would strengthen the bond the mongols had with their conquered people
- They didn't support Daoism because their beliefs conflicted with Buddhist beliefs
- Mongols support Buddhism and often sided with them in any conflicts with Daoism
